Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is hoping for 12 month extension to his contract - but needs to play 30 games this season to earn it.

The veteran Dutch stopper penned a year-long deal at Old Trafford in February with a clause written in which could take him past his 41st birthday.

Battling it out: Van der Sar (r) may have to sit it out on European nights as Kuszczak is handed his chance

But he featured just 29 times for the Reds last term and faces stern competition from Poliosh reserve Tomasz Kuszczak.

Kuszczak, 28, is expected to be given the nod in European competition ahead of the former Holland international who turns 40 next month as Sir Alex Ferguson hands his first choice keeper a break between games.
