Edwin turned down Dutch offer
Holland boss Bert van Marwijk has revealed that he asked Edwin van der Sar to come out of international retirement.[LNB] Van der Sar, who has been in record-breaking form for Manchester United in the Premier league this season, decided after Euro 2008 that he no longer wanted to play for his country.[LNB]The 38-year-old accepted an emergency call-up for last year's World Cup qualifiers against Iceland and Norway but has now turned down a second request.[LNB]Van Marwijk admits he only considered Van der Sar because he desperately wanted to find a solution to his current problems.[LNB]Maarten Stekelenburg has been dropped by Ajax, while Henk Timmer has been told he can leave Feyenoord after a poor season.[LNB]The inexperienced Michel Vorm of FC Utrecht is Van Marwijk's third option ahead of the upcoming qualifiers with Scotland and Macedonia.[LNB]PotentialVan Marwijk told The Herald: "Against my better judgment I called Edwin because of our present difficulties.[LNB]"We had agreed the book was closed before we had these injuries and while I knew what the answer would be, I still called him.[LNB]"All our other keepers have a story to tell, sickness, injury or poor form but I will stick by Stekelenburg.[LNB]"He has the most potential of all of them and is the best available.[LNB]"He is not playing for Ajax, and that is a disadvantage, but this gives him a chance to prove that he can come back stronger."[LNB]
