ShareNani is desperate for Dimitar Berbatov to stay at Manchester United, but believes the unsettled striker could be left with no option other than to quit Old Trafford in the summer.

United's record-signing was unceremoniously axed by Sir Alex Ferguson for the Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday evening.

Down and out: Berbatov could have played his last game for United after being dropped for the Wembley showpiece

The 30-year-old refused to take his place in the stands, and didn't join his team-mates on the Wembley turf after the 3-1 defeat by the Catalan giants.

Berbatov has started just five of United's last 20 games, and Nani admits the striker is struggling at Old Trafford.

'It's a very difficult moment for him. It's very hard but the manager has to make a decision and it's very hard for him too,' Nani said.

Flying high: The 30-year-old is United's top scorer this season, but is set to leave in the summer

'When I wasn't playing, maybe 18 months ago, I was in a different position to him because I was still young.

'I was 21 and I knew I had a lot of time to learn, to improve and get my place back in the team. For him, I don't know what he has in mind but everyone knows he's a fantastic player.

'He has scored a lot of goals, and I would like him to play for Manchester United again next season.'

Ferguson is planning a summer swoop for Tottenham striker Luka Modric, and Berbatov, who spent two seasons at White Hart Lane, could be used as part of the deal.

Explaining his decision to axe the Bulgarian, Ferguson said:  'I overloaded the bench with midfielders because I felt that was the area that was most important in terms of the way Barcelona play.

'I gambled by selecting only one defender [on the bench] to allow me to give me as many options in midfield and the wide position with Nani. So it came down to a choice between Owen and Berbatov.

'My view on that was if you're looking for someone to nick a goal in the last few minutes of a game, then Owen's experience is why I took that decision.'
