Wigan Athletic completed the signing of French midfielder Mohamed Diame from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, the Premier League club said. The 22-year-old agreed a three-year deal and received his international clearance just in time for him to make his first start for the club against champions Manchester United at home on Saturday. "Credit to Vallecano," Wigan's Spanish manager Roberto Martinez told the club's website (www.wiganlatics.co.uk). "We weren't sure if he would be eligible, but they pulled out all the stops at the end to get the deal rushed through in time." Martinez, in his first season as a Premier League manager after a successful spell at Swansea City, said that Diame would be the ideal replacement for Lee Cattermole who was sold to Sunderland recently. "He is a superb athlete, very tactically aware and strong in the tackle," Martinez said. (Reporting by Martyn Herman; editing by Justin Palmer)
