Delap turns back the clock

Stoke midfielder Rory Delap took a trip down memory lane as he prepared to face Manchester United on Saturday at the Britannia Stadium. Tackling Sir Alex Ferguson's side is always special for the 33-year-old, who has also worn the colours of Carlisle, Derby, Southampton and Sunderland. Delap is poised to make his 399th career league appearance - and can vividly remember where it all started. He was Carlisle's youngest player at 16 years, 306 days when he came off the bench in May 1993 against Scarborough. Delap recalls: "I can remember it as if it was yesterday. I was earning £29.50 a week on the YTS scheme. You didn't negotiate bonuses then. My best mate started the game to become Carlisle's youngest player but when I came on I beat him by about 12 days. The game finished all square at 2-2. Mind you when I arrived we were 2-0 up so we had better keep that quiet. "I am still thoroughly enjoying myself and proud of playing so many games, although there could have been a lot more. It's not a bad tally for someone seen as just a long-throw specialist."
