De Gea gets boss' backing

Sir Alex Ferguson has given his backing to new Manchester United keeper David De Gea and claims he can be the next Peter Schmeichel. The United chief spoke out about the 20-year-old shot-stopper, who has looked shaky and conceded some soft goals in the Community Shield win against Manchester City and Premier League opener at West Brom. And Ferguson insists that De Gea, who he paid Atletico Madrid £18million for his signature this summer, will be back between the sticks when Tottenham visit on Monday, while he has also seen similarities between the young Spaniard and Red Devils legend Schmeichel when he arrived at Old Trafford.Ferguson said: "David has not mentioned the criticism. He's been fine with his training and I have no problem with him."I think a couple of the goals he has conceded have been down to concentration but Schmeichel went through the same baptism of fire."He went to Wimbledon and was squealing like a pig for protection from Vinnie Jones, Alan Cork and John Fashanu. They were all piling on top of him, kicking lumps out of him."As for David, he is only 20 and he can deal with balls played into the box."The problem is that he has had no protection and that's disappointing. "He's had players under his body and taken an elbow in the face - which was bad."Away from home, he might be subjected to things like that."But we are at home on Monday night, so there will be no problem there."
