WAYNE Rooney gave a timely reminder of just what United need when the 2010 January transfer window opens on Friday. His display at Hull on Sunday emphasised just how reliant the Reds are on the England striker for their attacking power. I don't think it is too strong to say that if the injury plague that has beset the defence suddenly spreads to Rooney then all United's ambitions could go up in smoke. The match at the KC Stadium supported something I have been concerned about and I am sure a lot of United fans fear that too much is resting on his shoulders. We're now four days away from the opportunity to provide him with some support but I don't think it will happen. Unless there is someone out there the general public haven't identified, then I think United will be going into February with the same attack and the same burden on Rooney. In an ideal world where the transfer market wasn't over-inflated and there was true value to be had, then I am sure Sir Alex Ferguson would be in there doing business. I know a lot of Reds fans would be tempted and a striker would be the priority. But like last summer the prices will be ridiculous and, of course, so many players will be cup-tied in Europe. It is not a climate for many of the big outfits to be seriously investing in a mid-season boost. How many of the most coveted world stars have ever moved clubs in January anyway? It is a limited market and I doubt that there is anyone available, and at a sensible price, who could have an immediate major say on United's fortunes. So if we are not likely to see a new face in a United shirt in the next month then it is going to have to come from within. Therefore, it is down to Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen to provide the impetus and support for Rooney. They have got to bring more to the table. What do you think? Have your say.
