David de Gea has made a thinly-veiled criticism of his former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal while praising the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the Dutchman's successor.
Van Gaal was sacked last month after two seasons in charge at United.
His tenure concluded with them winning the FA Cup, the club's first major trophy since 2013.
But they also finished the 2015-16 Premier League season in fifth position, a year on from coming fourth, and were knocked out of last term's Champions League at the group stage.
Earlier this month, following the confirmation of Mourinho's arrival on a three-year contract, goalkeeper De Gea expressed his desire to stay at United to work with a man he described as a "winner".
And in an interview with Spanish radio network Cadena Ser published on Friday, De Gea said: "I came to United to win trophies and it is true that these last two years we have not been at the level this club deserves.
"But hopefully, with the change of coach, United will be back at the highest level"
The Spain international said he had not yet spoken with Mourinho, but added of the Portuguese: "I think at United we needed a coach like him - a coach with personality and a winning coach.
"The signing of Mourinho is a wise move."
