CSKA Moscow v Manchester United: Jonny Evans vows to express himself on pitch

20 October 2009 08:51
Northern Ireland defender Evans is expected to make his ninth start of the season when Manchester United tackle CSKA Moscow in the Champions League Group B on Wednesday. With United due to travel to Liverpool on Sunday, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering resting Ferdinand and sparing the 30 year-old from the rigours of performing on CSKA’s artificial pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium. Ferguson has admitted that the progress of Evans over the last 12 months has highlighted his ability to secure a regular starting spot. But Evans himself claims that he still has more to do before he can look to casting either Vidic or Ferdinand to the bench. Evans said: "I had a decent season last season, but I was playing within myself a bit. “I've got to learn how to express myself a bit more on the pitch. "I'm still learning and improving all the time and I feel like there's a lot more to come from me. "Last year, because it was my first real season in the team, I just stuck to the defending side of things. "This year I need to get on the ball and express myself more. Last year it was a conscious decision to play it safe and not be at fault for any goals. "I'm not saying I'll be trying to dribble the ball all the way through the opposition from now on, just that I need to be more outgoing and commanding on the pitch." United are due to train at the Luzhniki, the scene of their Champions League triumph over Chelsea in 2008, at 17.30 UK time this evening. Senegalese forward Mame Biram Diouf, who is on loan at Norwegian club Molde from United, admits he has yet to hear whether he will return to Old Trafford in January. United are attempting to secure a work permit for the 21 year-old, but Diouf, who has scored four goals in 12 games for Molde this season, is keen to focus solely on his performances in Norway. Diouf said: "I haven't had any contact with Manchester United after signing for the club (in July). “I don't wish to have any contact either because it would confuse me. “Now it's full focus on Molde and the last games of the season. I have to have full focus on Molde as a team and not on myself. “I have hardly ever spoken about United with the other players in the dressing room. I want as little focus on United before the season ends.”
