Convey expects Hernandez to thrive

Former Reading striker Bobby Convey does not feel Javier Hernandez has any reason to fear suffering from second-season syndrome.[LNB] Although Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated it is too soon to consider Hernandez for Manchester United's meeting with the MLS All-Stars at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night, the Mexico striker has still been the centre of attention.[LNB]He was asked far more questions than Wayne Rooney at Monday's pre-game press conference and at a Nike event in New York on Tuesday, the 22-year-old was the player being shrieked at by enthusiastic fans.[LNB]It all adds to pressure of discovering whether Hernandez can exceed the 20 goals he scored in all competitions during his debut campaign.[LNB]Experts usually claim the second season in a new environment is the one where players find it toughest.[LNB]Yet it is a theory Convey doesn't agree with.[LNB]"Since he did so well initially, people will notice him more now," he said.[LNB]"But it is not like it takes a whole season for teams to get used to opposition players. They figure it out pretty quickly.[LNB]"Last season, he proved he can score goals. He makes great runs and holds the ball up well. He is going to be a very good player."[LNB]And there is no doubt either that if Hernandez does make an appearance, even for the briefest time, the reception he will get is likely to match those David Beckham received at the height of his popularity.[LNB]For a vast Mexican population will be well represented at the Red Bull Arena.[LNB]And, despite the presence of Beckham and Thierry Henry alongside Convey in the All-Stars' line-up, everyone knows who will receive the loudest cheers.[LNB]"There are a lot of Mexican-American people in the States," said Convey.[LNB]"Mexico are almost more popular than the US players because soccer is the main sport there.[LNB]"He is already a superstar in Mexico and England. As he plays more games American people will take notice.[LNB]"Last year in the All-Star game he probably got the loudest cheer of anyone.[LNB]"In Mexico, any player that stands out for the national team, they really get behind. The population really want Mexico to do well."[LNB]
