Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has accepted libel damages after The Sun newspaper claimed he had "badgered" a girl for sex

It was claimed by the newspaper in August that Cleverley had met the girl in Blackpool and repeatedly asked her for sex in the days that followed.

The high court heard that it was not the United player that she had met but instead an impersonator from West Yorkshire.

Cleverley has been offered "substantial" damages by News Group Newspapers for a story which has left him "extremely upset and embarrassed".

David Price QC said: "It transpires that, entirely unknown to the girl involved, an individual from Shipley who resembles Mr Cleverley was impersonating him, while another individual from the same town pretended to be his bodyguard."

The News Group Newspapers have agreed to publish an apology to the future England star and pay substantial damages to the player.
