City throw Roma's Mexes into mix as they step up search for defenders

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Roma centre-back Philippe Mexes. The Barclays Premier League club are expected to complete the £15million signing of Kolo Toure from Arsenal, though they are unlikely to stop there in pursuit of defensive reinforcements. Sportsmail understands that Mark Hughes is still on Everton's Joleon Lescott and West Ham's Matthew Upson, while French newspaper Le Parisien says they have enquired about 27-year-old Mexes. He is happy at the Olympic Stadium but is one of the players cash-strapped Roma are prepared to sell if it helps to keep untouchables such as midfielder Daniele De Rossi and captain Francesco Totti. City have turned their attention to defenders after splashing out £80m on Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry.
