Boss hails Rooney despite defeat

Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander praised striker John Rooney after he scored his first goal for the club in the 2-1 defeat at Dagenham. The brother of Manchester United star Wayne made the most of a dreadful error by Mark Arber to drill past Tony Roberts seven minutes before the break. But goals from Paul Benson and Matt Ritchie in the final 19 minutes turned the game on its head to give Dagenham all three points. "He (Rooney) is a good player and we knew that when he gets a run in the team he will do very well," Alexander said. "If we can get him in the right positions then he will score goals. "I was delighted with the performance from my side as I thought we were the better team so I was disappointed with the result. "I don't want to be too critical of the defence but we know we should have done better. "
