Manchester United's pursuit of Dutch wonderkid Memphis Depay has been given a fresh boost as PSV reveal the 21-year-old is free to leave the Eredivisie this summer.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for the exciting forward during both summer and winter transfer windows after Depay starred for van Gaal during this summers World Cup in Brazil.

The pair are said to have an extremely strong bond with Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal being a 'father figure' for the youngster.

United will still likely have competition from top four rivals Tottenham, with the London club having a £15million bid turned down in January as PSV were reluctant to sell until the season had finished.

PSV director Toon Gerbrands has now given Depay the green light for a summer exit, clearing Manchester United to move in and secure their man.

‘We decided to keep hold of him in January,’ Gerbrands told Dutch television channel NOS.

‘But he has the option to leave after this season.’
