Belief in the boss convinced me we would rule again, says United's Rio

Rio Ferdinand never doubted Sir Alex Ferguson when he told his players Manchester United would roard back to the top. After three years without a league title, the summer of 2006 looked to be very bleak, with some pundits believing it would be Ferguson's last at Old Trafford unless he somehow found a way to get the better of Chelsea and Arsenal.   However, Ferguson was always confident his team would come good and Ferdinand recalled: 'Four seasons ago everyone was saying we were finished and that we were a spent force.   'I remember people booing Ryan Giggs. That is how mad it was. But the manager calmed us down, told us to take our time and trust him.   'He assured us it was a transitional period. The results since have proved that. We have not won anything yet but we are in a great position to do so.' Victory at Wigan tonight and United will be crowned champions for the 18th time if they take a point against Arsenal at the weekend. But Ferdinand added: 'You cannot afford to daydream. What you must do is sit and look at what is going on in front of you.  'We don't start counting our chickens too early. We've been drilled to take the whole situation game by game. That is how we've become successful.'  Ferdinand is hoping to overcome a calf strain while Jonny Evans is also struggling with a hamstring injury. John O'Shea might be drafted into central defence alongside Nemanja Vidic.   Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Anderson and Ben Foster are among those who will also hope for a recall.
