David Beckham is backing former club Manchester United to retain the UEFA Champions League trophy.

The 33-year-old former Red Devil believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side are currently the strongest side in Europe, although he is wary of the threat posed by Liverpool.

The ex-Real Madrid man would love to see Manchester United tackle high-flying Barcelona in this year's final which will be staged at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Beckham cannot play for AC Milan in this year's competition although he hopes to add to his appearances in the tournament next season, even if it means facing United.

Love to see"I'd like to see United play Barcelona in this season's Champions League final," Beckham told the Daily Star Sunday.

"My old team-mates would win, as right now United are too strong for everybody else.

"That is even thought Liverpool are a frightening prospect when Steve Gerrard is playing for them.

"I really miss playing the Champions League. Maybe I'll get to play in a final against United.

"It could be a problem, but if I played for Milan against United next year I would want to win it, even though I am a United fan."
