Bayern fear Manuel Neuer transfer will collapse and open the door for Manchester United

ShareManchester United's chances of signing Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer have been given a boost by Bayern Munich's admission that the German international may be out of their reach. [LNB]The stopper is one of the world game's brightest prospects and is certain to leave 04 at the end of the campaign, ending a 20-year association with the club.[LNB]Bayern were widely believed to be his destination of choice, with the player suggesting as such in a number of interviews. But Neuer's outstanding performance against United in the Champions League semi-final first leg rekindled Sir Alex Ferguson interest in a deal. [LNB] Safe hands: Manuel Neuer is wanted by a host of Europe's top clubs[LNB]Both United and Bayern are in the market for a new goalkeeper after Old Man Time caught up with current custodians Edwin van der Sar and Hans Jorg-Butt.[LNB]However despite overtures from players and management alike, Munich have no taken a step back from the speculation, opening the door to a rival bid from the Premier League.[LNB]Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: 'I don't really think we are going to find a quick agreement. And I am also not convinced that Bayern and Schalke will find a price which suits them both, but we will have to wait and see - the transfer window is still open for four more months.'[LNB] Lying down on the job: There are concerns from both parties that a deal will not be struck[LNB]'But We will definitely be signing a new goalkeeper,' he added.[LNB]Bayern are willing to offer ?20million for the World Cup keeper, still some way short of Schalke's ?35m valuation.[LNB]German newspaper Bild reports that the Bundesliga outfit have switched their attention to Mainz goalkeeper Heinz Muller.
