Bastian Schweinsteiger eyeing more Champions League glory with Manchester United

Bastian Schweinsteiger is hoping to lift the Champions League trophy one more time before he leaves Manchester United.

United will seal their place in the knockout stages of the competition on Wednesday if they beat PSV at Old Trafford.

Qualification seemed a tall order when United lost the reverse fixture 2-1 in September, but they have since taken seven points from a possible nine which means the knockout stages are now within their grasp.

Schweinsteiger has his sights set on a bigger prize than the last 16, however.

The Germany midfielder won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2013 and wants to do the same with United before his three-year contract ends in 2018.

"I hope there are many more seasons to come with United and there's still more to achieve in the competition," the 31-year-old told Inside United.

"I feel very good at the moment. We have experience in the team and we have young players with quality in the team so if we do our job well in the group then I think we can achieve a lot.

"I want to win titles and I think Manchester United is also used to winning titles so that is definitely my goal.

"But for these types of moments we all have to work very hard together and always try to improve ourselves. Hopefully we will get there."

Schweinsteiger became the first German to appear in 13 Champions League campaigns when he turned out for United in their group opener in Eindhoven two months ago.

The World Cup winner has enjoyed some highs and lows during his career in the competition, and says the toughest match he has played in was five years ago at Old Trafford.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg of the quarter-final, Bayern found themselves 3-0 down in the return fixture thanks to Darron Gibson's strike and a brace from Nani.

Luckily for Schweinsteiger, Bayern scored either side of Rafael's dismissal to progress on away goals.

"When we played at Old Trafford after 10 minutes we were 2-0 down and I will never forget those 10 minutes because they played so unbelievably well," Schweinsteiger said.

"They played us off the pitch."

His low point came two years later when Bayern lost the final to Chelsea on penalties at the Allianz Arena.

"We dominated the match and also missed a penalty in extra-time, before losing on penalties so we were not so lucky that day," he said.

"That would have to be my biggest disappointment."

The first meeting between United and PSV in this year's group stages was overshadowed by Luke Shaw's leg break.

The left-back, who started the season in superb form, fractured his right leg in two places following a tackle by Hector Moreno.

It is understood there are no plans for the PSV squad to meet with Shaw when they land in Manchester on the eve of the game.

As far as PSV are concerned the matter is now closed. Moreno and his team-mates, as well as coach Phillip Cocu visited Shaw while he recovered in an Eindhoven hospital two days after the game.

Moreno is understood to have apologised to Shaw and the squad presented the England left-back with a get well soon card at the hospital.

PSV fans also sent gifts to the 20-year-old during his recovery from surgery.
