Amos aims to win three-way fight

en Amos must decide whether to gamble on his first-team chances at Manchester United and risk losing the senior action he craves.[LNB] With Edwin van der Sar now retired, a three-way fight is on to become United's new number one.[LNB]Amos realises he is the outsider. After all, David De Gea has just been bought from Atletico Madrid for £18million and Anders Lindegaard is a fully-fledged Denmark international.[LNB]However, the 21-year-old has impressed in his two appearances on United's tour of North America and further opportunities cannot be ruled out for the youngster.[LNB]Yet Amos knows realistically, if he remains at United this season, his diet will mainly consist of reserve team football.[LNB]It is not a particularly palatable thought, especially when he knows De Gea is young, and arrives at Old Trafford with two seasons' worth of La Liga combat behind him.[LNB]"It is a decision like you would not believe," he said.[LNB]"It is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make and I am still thinking about it now.[LNB]"I do see an opportunity there. If I perform to the right level, anything can happen. The manager could throw me in.[LNB]"At the same time, I am risking not getting the game time that I desperately need. I am weighing up the options and we will just see what happens."[LNB]Amos knows a meeting with goalkeeping coach Eric Steele once United return from the States holds the key to his short-term future.[LNB]"I am sure it will become obvious over the next couple of weeks," he said.[LNB]"You can progress. You need that break sometimes and someone to stick with you when you have made a few mistakes.[LNB]"It's there with David. He has played two seasons in La Liga. That kind of experience at such a young age is critical."[LNB]Although Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated De Gea is intended to be his first choice, the matter is not completely clear-cut.[LNB]For a start, De Gea's English is patchy, a major handicap in trying to organise a defence, especially in front of 76,000 at the ground he now calls home.[LNB]He is only 20, so lacks wider experience and whilst his talent is not in question, he needs to add some bulk to his obviously light frame if he is to withstand the physical nature of Premier League battle.[LNB]"David is light," said Amos. "He is only about 75kg.[LNB]"But he has got a good spring. That is one of his strengths.[LNB]"I would like to think I am on a similar level to him. We are pushing each other in training, which is healthy.[LNB]"He seems like a good lad. Once his English comes along over the next couple of months, he will improve still further."[LNB]De Gea will probably be handed the starting berth against Barcelona at FedEx Field on Saturday before United head home to prepare for Paul Scholes' testimonial on August 5 and the Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley two days later.[LNB]Ferguson wants his team to be fully ready for that one as he has no intention of handing an early initiative to Roberto Mancini as the Blues boss looks to make a fast start following the £35million arrival of De Gea's old Atletico Madrid team-mate Sergio Aguero.[LNB]At least the goalkeeping department is not lacking in motivation as they push themselves towards the starting gate.[LNB]"Giving up probably isn't the right phrase but when Edwin was here, he had so obviously cemented that position and it was difficult to see a route through to being number one," said Amos.[LNB]"Now there is a chink in the armour and we are all gunning for it."
