Agent urges Ronaldo to put off Manchester United return and remain in Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo has been advised by his agent Jorge Mendes to stay at Real Madrid for another season.

Ronaldo has only two years left on his contract at the Bernabeu after this season and is considering leaving Spain, with both French club PSG and his former club Manchester United both interested.

However the 28-year-old has been told by his friend and advisor Mendes that he would be best served staying at the Bernabeu for another year and then taking his pick of clubs across Europe.

Much will depend on whether coach Jose Mourinho stays at Real beyond this season. Mourinho is also a target for PSG, though he is known to prefer a move to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford in the long term.

Ronaldo was clearly touched by the affection he received from the Old Trafford faithful last week, which remained even after the winger scored the goal that sent United crashing out of the Champions League.

And earlier this week, Real director Emilio Butragueno offered no obvious reason for optimism about United's chances of getting the 2008 World Player of the Year back.

'Cristiano is under contract and we are very happy with him,' he said. 'We are delighted he is at Madrid because he is a fantastic professional and very ambitious in a positive way.

'His contribution to the team and the club has been amazing since he arrived. We are very grateful he came to us and are lucky he plays for Real Madrid.'
