A worthy winner

David Platt told Sky Sports News he believes Ryan Giggs is a worthy winner of the PFA Player of the Year award.[LNB] The Manchester United midfielder has only started 12 Premier League games this season but has been pivotal in many of the club's major games in the league and Champions League and has helped them win the League Cup and World Club Cup already this season. [LNB]"The award is normally given to a player who has played exceptionally well all season," said Platt. "Well whenever Giggs has played he's done exceptionally well.[LNB]"Sir Alex Ferguson has rested him for the smaller games to make sure he plays in the bigger games. [LNB]"I don't think it is strange that he has got the award. The players vote for it and I think they have recognised his achievements over a period of time, not just this season. [LNB]"Yes, he has played very, very well but it's been given to him for his professionalism and consistent performances for Manchester United since he was 16."[LNB]Giggs was once again rested at the weekend when United fought back from 2-0 down against Tottenham Hotspur to win 5-2 at Old Trafford. [LNB]LandmarkThe Welshman, who is just one game away from his 800th appearance for United, watched from the stands as United produced a remarkable turn-around. [LNB]However, he is likely to reach that landmark on Wednesday night when United take on Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final. [LNB]Platt believes the tie will be a close affair but believes, despite Arsenal's recent run of good form, United will just edge past their English rivals. [LNB]"For about a month or so United have been grinding results out while Arsenal are performing week-in, week-out. Going into the semi-final Arsenal are playing better than United and, on form, should be favourites. [LNB]"But I would never rule out United. I think they've got too many options and too much ability not to do it. They've got enough left in the tank. Andrey Arshavin will also be a big loss for Arsenal."[LNB]Magic MessiIn the other half of the draw Platt suspects Barcelona's Lionel Messi's exceptional talent will be crucial when they face Chelsea. [LNB]"When he's on form and he gets the ball he is a formidable player who can do things others can't do. The boy's a genius in the way he can find space and dribble. This year he has become a goal scorer too. He can now finish the chances he creates. [LNB]"I think Guus Hiddink will use Jose Bosingwa but he will need help from whoever plays in front of him - they will have to double up on Messi."[LNB]The ability of Barcelona's key players, such as Messi, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o, to create something out of nothing could decide the tie, Platt said. "I think Chelsea have hit a decent run of form but Barcelona have players who can change a game. [LNB]"I would lean towards Barcelona because even if Messi is having a quiet game he is likely to create a moment of brilliance within the game that can change it."[LNB]Platt predicts and equally tight game between the two English clubs. "I think both affairs will be tight. Similarly with Manchester United against Arsenal - I think if Ronaldo can hit the heights he has been hitting in recent weeks he could be the match winner in that one."[LNB]
