It’s not very often that Sergio Aguero is despatched to the shade at the Etihad – but Yaya Toure’s huge frame managed to do just that last night as the Ivory Coast international capped a memorable week with two goals, and a man of the match performance, in the 3-2 win at West Brom.
Even though Aguero took his Premier League tally for the season to 11 with a trademark poacher’s goal at the Hawthorns, it was Toure who was the overall star of the show with a sublime, subtle finish not readily associated with a big unit like him, and a well-taken penalty.
Toure is a midfield man mountain, a marauding playmaker with an eye for goal very much in the mould of Patrick Vieira, and he has been outstanding so far this season in the engine room of a City side with more than half an eye on the big prize.
Toure, having this week been named the BBC African Player of the Year, might also have his sights on another personal prize in the shape of the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month as he continues to strut his stuff in impressive fashion. “He is a very important player for us and is in a very good moment,” said Manuel Pellegrini.
Of his national award a proud Ivory Coast star, who beat Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Victor Moses, John Mikel Obi and Jonathan Pitroipa to this year's crown, said: “I think I've been nominated for five years in a row and finally winning the award is amazing.
"It's a fantastic achievement because I don't think there has ever been as many quality African players in top-level international football as there are now. It's something special because it's not the vote of the manager or the club or the captain of the national team, it's just the fans.”
And it will be the fans who may lend him their votes in our latest search to find our player of the month in the face of some serious competition, not least from teammate Aguero and Toure’s returning captain Vincent Kompany.
City’s appalling away form this season, before last night, could perhaps be put down largely to the absence of Kompany who made a more than welcome return after missing ten games with a thigh injury, easing himself back into the fray with an accomplished display.
He said: “It was one of those games where you don’t have to be a hero because you can blow up.
