Why Robinho was shown the door by Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini

Forlorn figure: Robinho's commitment and body language were often questioned at City[LNB]Perhaps one of the key moments of Roberto Mancini's short time at Manchester City came as early as last January when he made the decision to let Brazilian star Robinho leave the club on loan. [LNB]Robinho caused Mancini's predecessor Mark Hughes constant problems with his reluctant attitude to training and his tendency to play poorly away from home. [LNB]But, whereas Hughes seemed determined to win what became a battle of wills with the former Real Madrid player, Mancini recognised very quickly that it would be better if Robinho played his football elsewhere. [LNB]Mancini said: 'For me, Robinho is a good player. I spoke with him in January and I asked him if he wanted to stay. He said no. [LNB]'He wanted to go back to Brazil because of the World Cup. That was it, as far as I was concerned. He didn't want to be part of it so there was no point in me having him at the club. [LNB]'I told him, if he wanted to stay, it was not a problem - though it would be important that he worked and played for the team but it was his decision. He decided to go.' [LNB]Robinho ended last season at Santos in South America and subsequently enjoyed a good World Cup until Brazil were unexpectedly knocked out by Holland at the quarter-final stage. [LNB] Priority: Robinho's World Cup ambitions led to him leave City, says Mancini[LNB]He is now up for sale and City would ideally like him to be off their wage bill - he earns £160,000 a week - by the start of the new Barclays Premier League season. Robinho is due to return to City on August 5. [LNB]Certainly, Mancini is not troubled by the absence of such a talented player. He showed his ability to make strong decisions when he substituted Robinho not long after sending him on as a replacement at Everton during a 3-0 defeat in January and subsequently adopted a similarly hard-line stance with Martin Petrov - now at Bolton - and Craig Bellamy. [LNB]Mancini added: 'I don't know about Robinho's situation because he doesn't want to come back. But Craig, at the moment, is working very well.'
