Warning for City slackers

Manchester City's under-performing stars have been given a stark warning that mediocrity will not be tolerated at Eastlands. First-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki insists that the mentality of the club must change with expectations substantially elevated by Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover and unprecedented financial backing. Mark Hughes' side are currently marooned in mid-table in the Premier League after a dismal 3-1 home defeat by Fulham and face an uphill task to keep their Uefa Cup hopes alive as they trail Hamburg 3-1 ahead of Thursday's second leg. Midfielder Stephen Ireland, one of the few shining lights for City this season, launched a withering attack on his team-mates after their defeat in Germany and now Niedzwiecki has followed suit. Hughes' right-hand man has warned any players who are more interested in financial gain than footballing success that they will not be accepted and will be weeded out. Niedzwiecki told The Telegraph: "It takes time for a new culture to evolve at a club. Some will embrace it and thrive, some won't and will fall by the wayside. "Mark Hughes has tasted winning and he doesn't suffer defeats or fools gladly. We know (the owners) will not accept mediocrity. "Demands are greater and the mentality has to change. If a player comes here with the wrong mentality then they will fall by the wayside. It is our job to either remove them or change. "It is important that anyone who comes to City to play is hungry to do well. We want players to be more interested in winning trophies than the cash that might be on offer. "Players should want to be remembered for what they achieved in the game and not for the cars they drive or the mansions they live in."
