Manchester United youth supremo Brian McClair - who used to be Sir Alex Ferguson's front man at the start of his reign - has defended his old manager against recent criticism. He also thinks Fergie's 'hairdryer' image is deceptive, claiming he has the ability to promote change in his players to improve the team. 'To listen to some people you would think we are in some kind of post-Ronaldo crisis,' said McClair. 'All I will say is look at history and look at Sir Alex Ferguson's record. 'Because it doesn't happen much I've been asked a lot how Sir Alex responds to defeat and the answer is a lot more complex than him dishing out the hairdryer treatment. 'I arrived at Old Trafford as a centre forward and ended up playing in midfield. You can only affect change if there is flexibility in the side. That flexibility is the real response to defeat.' McClair has also had to defend his club after taunts from Manchester City, but dismissed their city rivals saying that United were only concentrating on their own performance.
