Two-goal Tevez says sorry to former fans... were you watching, Adebayor?

Carlos Tevez said sorry to his old club West Ham as he fired Manchester City back into the thick of the Barclays Premier League title race. The Argentina forward got his first two league goals for his new club to inspire a 3-1 win but showed his team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor how to celebrate — or how not to — in front of fans who still idolise him for saving West Ham from relegation two years ago. Tevez scored his first after five minutes and held up an apologetic hand to the travelling fans. He earned praise from both managers for a class performance. West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola said: ‘Great players like him are also gentlemen and he showed that. I appreciate him not only for what he did after the celebration but the way he played the whole game. I thought he was fantastic.’ Adebayor, who missed the match as part of his three-game ban for kicking Robin van Persie two weeks ago, angered Arsenal fans for running the length of the field to celebrate a goal against his old club in City’s 4-2 win. A week after their perfect start to the season was wrecked by neighbours United, City hit back as Tevez got his first League goals since his £25m move in the summer. Carlton Cole cancelled out Tevez’s opener, but Martin Petrov marked his first appearance of the season with a goal from a free-kick before the Tevez added a second. Zola added: ‘I was really impressed by City. Some of their quality was outstanding. If they play to this standard they will be up there at the end of the season.’ It gave City a welcome boost after the pain of losing to Michael Owen’s injury-time winner at Old Trafford. Manager Mark Hughes said: ‘We move on. The derby is a big game but it’s out of our system and we’re in good shape. I thought some of our play was excellent.’
