Sunderland have launched a £6million bid for Germany international Heiko Westermann.

The Schalke defender should have been in South Africa with the national side for the World Cup but unfortunately breaking a toe in his right foot during a pre-tournament friendly against Hungary.

However, that may work in Sunderland's favour as it allows them to begin talks without him attracting further attention from other clubs.

Wanted: Sunderland have tabled a £6m bid for German defender Westermann

Westermann had just battled back to form after missing a month with a knee injury in January. He can play in any position across the back four and is equally adept in midfield.

At 6ft 3ins tall, the 26-year-old also has a knack of getting on the end of set-pieces andhas scored 12 goals in 92 Bundesliga games.

Case for the defence: Sunderland are keen on Nedum Onuoha and Matty Upson

Sunderland are also interested in Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha and West Ham's Matthew Upson but Westermann represents better value and would be a key, quality signing if they can pull it off.
