Shilton gives Hart England warning

Peter Shilton has warned Joe Hart he can afford no more than one mistake in the next year if he wants to remain England number one.[LNB] Manchester City star Hart, 23, has established himself as Fabio Capello's first-choice goalkeeper following a string of impressive displays this season.[LNB]But Shilton, who won a record 125 England caps in a glittering career between the posts, reckons Hart is only two gaffes away from surrendering the jersey.[LNB]"He's looked confident, he's looked strong, he's looked sharp," said Shilton as he teamed up with Holiday Inn to launch a search for members of the public to take part in a five-a-side rematch of England's World Cup thrashing by Germany.[LNB]"He looks as though he shouts as well, you just feel as though he's in charge.[LNB]"Now is the time that we've got to see what he's made of and the only way to do that is to be consistent and solid and make the saves when you have to.[LNB]"But make sure you don't make mistakes, Joe, because that's what will cost you your England place.[LNB]"He's got to make one every year or one every 18 months, not one every two or three games, which is what let down the previous goalkeepers."[LNB]Shilton believes Hart could remain undisputed number one for many years if he maintains the form he has shown in his three England matches this season[LNB]"He's done exceptionally well," Shilton said. "He's come from probably being a reserve at Manchester City to England's first-choice keeper in 18 months.[LNB]"He's got the chance to be there for a long time, it's still early days. You couldn't really ask any more of him, he's shown a lot of confidence, a lot of belief.[LNB]"I think he's given the defence in front of him and the team in front of him confidence."[LNB]Hart is set to start his fourth successive England match in next Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.[LNB]His understudy is 27-year-old Ben Foster and Shilton believes it is important the Birmingham goalkeeper puts pressure on Hart to continue performing.[LNB]However, he urged Capello to make it clear which of them is his number one if the Italian wants the rivalry to be of benefit to Hart.[LNB]"It will be as long as he plays in the team and Ben doesn't get in," said Shilton, who spent years vying with Ray Clemence for the England jersey.[LNB]"With Ray and myself, Don Revie preferred Ray to me and Ray got 60-odd caps in three years and I hardly played.[LNB]"We had this situation as well when we were alternating for some period and that wasn't really right.[LNB]"Although you've got somebody pushing you, you want to know that you're number one."[LNB]The third goalkeeper in the squad is Rob Green, who is proof of how costly one mistake can be after receiving his first call-up since his World Cup blunder against the United States.[LNB]Shilton added: "He was pretty consistent and then had that worst moment of his career and it will live with him forever.[LNB]"But at least he's back in the squad and maybe he'll get an opportunity in future to repay that error and let England fans forget it."
