Santa Cruz: Manchester derby on the up

20 April 2010 14:56
Roque Santa CruzManchester's is set to become the world's greatest derby. Roque Santa Cruz believes the rise of City means Saturday's clash with United could be the start of something special, with high stakes every time the Reds and Blues meet in years to come. There has not been so much at stake in a City v United clash since 1968, when both clubs were gunning for the league title. But City star Santa Cruz feels this crunch match is just the start, and that future matches will decide silverware. Milan has lived with such rivalry for years, and so has Glasgow, but the contrasting fortunes of the Manchester clubs has prevented the game from being so consequential. Santa Cruz said: "It will get to the same level as we are getting better and the team is going to build up a history in terms of being as good as United have been in the past. "And the better we do, the more interesting the derby becomes. "They have that in places like Milan, where they have two top teams in one city, and it is going to be like that in Manchester in the future. "It is already a big deal, with them second and us fourth, but it will get even better for football in Manchester. "It makes everything a bit more interesting, the fact that they are playing for the league and we are in the last part of the fight for fourth spot." Santa Cruz himself is still fighting for full fitness and the best he can hope for is a place on the subs' bench. But he has watched teammate Carlos Tevez in awe as he has racked up 28 goals this season - and feels the Argentine is in the mood to wreck United's title ambitions. "Carlos has been fantastic for the whole season," said the Paraguayan striker. "He has been scoring braces and hat-tricks, but this will be a massive game for him. He wants to prove himself against United, and possibly to try to ruin their hopes for the title." Santa Cruz was speaking at the launch of City's Premier League 4 Sport project, aimed at getting kids in north and east Manchester, and Tameside, more involved in sport as part of a government initiative.
