Robinho arrested over 'rape in nightclub' claims

The Brazilian striker, 25, who has a wife and son, allegedly gave a routine DNA sample at a police station, was photographed and then questioned. [LNB]He was held after a university student allegedly told police she had been attacked in a VIP area of a club called Space in Leeds. [LNB]Police had hoped to question the former Real Madrid player after City's training camp in Tenerife earlier this month. [LNB]But they were forced to wait after he flew back to Brazil for "family reasons", thought to be his 25th birthday party. Manager Mark Hughes promised to fine the player over the episode. [LNB]Robinho, who cost £32.5 million in the summer, is back in Manchester after being released on police bail. [LNB]The incident is alleged to have happened in the early hours of January 14 in the Space nightclub. It was reported to police that afternoon. [LNB]The alleged victim, who attends a Yorkshire university, but is originally from the south of England, was with friends. [LNB]In a statement on Robinho's website, the player's spokesman, Chris Nathaniel, said last night: "We can confirm that Robinho met the police today as prearranged as part of a criminal investigation. [LNB]"He strenuously denies any allegations of wrong-doing or criminality and is happy to co-operate with the police if required further."[LNB]A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: "A man was arrested and questioned in connection with an alleged incident in the Space nightclub in Leeds on January 14. He has been released on police bail."[LNB]Manchester City are due to play Newcastle on Wednesday night. [LNB]
