Redknapp wants £5m Dunne as cover for injury-prone King and Woodgate

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is hoping to snatch Manchester City defender Richard Dunne from under Sunderland's nose. The 29-year-old central defender had looked certain to  become Steve Bruce's first signing at the Stadium of Light but Redknapp is launching a late bid for the £5m-rated Irishman. The White Hart Lane chief fears his favoured central defensive combination of Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King are too injury-prone to string together too many successive appearances and sees Dunne as the man to provide stability. Dunne came close to linking up with Redknapp at Portsmouth last year but was persuaded to stay at Eastlands by a £55,000 a week contract. City boss Mark Hughes is reluctant to let Dunne go until he signs a big-name replacement - Chelsea and England skipper John Terry still tops his lost - but if he does leave the club, Sunderland are still hot favourites to sign him because of his close friendship with Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn.
