Portsmouth sign Tal BenHaim from Manchester City

Portsmouth took their signings to 14 for the summer with as many players leaving as manager Paul Hart continued to hastily rebuild his squad following the takeover of the club by Sulaiman Al Fahim. The biggest name, in terms of arrivals, was Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City, who has signed a four-year deal pending a work permit being granted. The Israel international will be partnered in central defence by Mike Williamson, who joined from Watford for £3 million on a four-year deal, which could rise to £4 million, after the Championship club had rejected two previous offers. Williamson, 25, joins his former team-mate, Tommy Smith, at the club. Hassan Yebda, 28, the French-born Algerian international, a defensive midfielder, arrived at Fratton Park after agreeing a loan deal for the rest of the season. However, Portsmouth failed to sign another loanee, Nicky Shorey, with the Aston Villa left-back failing to agree personal terms on a move even though the clubs had agreed a deal. Leaving Portsmouth along with Niko Kranjcar, who has joined Tottenham is striker David Nugent, who has been a £6million flop, having agreed a six-month loan deal to Burnley with a view to a permanent transfer. Spurs failed to bid for David James which means that Portsmouth will, probably, allow another goalkeeper, Jamie Ashdown, to join Kilmarnock, probably on loan following the arrival of Antti Niemi.
