PFA Premier League Team of the Year 2011/12

23 April 2012 15:49
The PFA Premier League Team of the Year is dominated by players from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

League leaders Manchester United only have one representative in the team, as do Arsenal, Everton and this season's surprise package, Newcastle United.

So here is the PFA Premier League Team of the Year:

Position : Goalkeeper
Joe Hart (Manchester City)
England's first choice goalkeeper has been an integral member of the Manchester City side this season playing in every League game for them so far, conceding 27 times. The 24-year-old has grown into his role as first choice for both club and country and shows signs of experience beyond his age. His rapid progression has even seen him mentioned as a possible candidate for the England captaincy, mainly due to his consistency between the posts.

Position: Defender
Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)
After returning to Tottenham in the summer following a loan spell at Aston Villa, Walker has cemented his place in the Spurs starting XI this season. The right-back scored a spectacular winner against Arsenal in the North London derby game in October and has received his first cap for England. His impressive season at White Hart Lane saw him win the prestigious PFA Young Player of the Year award to go alongside his place the Team of the Year.

Position: Defender
Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)
The Belgian defender has been reliable and dependable at the heart of the Manchester City defence this season. He was given the captain's armband at the start of season and has proved his leadership credentials. The 26-year-old has featured in 28 of City's league games, contributing 2 goals to the team. Having been named Manchester City player of the season for 2010/11, he is now beginning to earn credentials outside of the club as well.

Position: Defender
Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle United)
Coloccini was named Newcastle captain in the summer following the departure of Kevin Nolan. He has accepted the responsibilty with open arms and has been a key member of a Newcastle side that has been rejuvenated this season in their pursuit of Champions League football. He didn't get off to the best of starts in English football when he signed from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008, but the Argentinian has matured into a quality centre-back.

Position: Defender
Leighton Baines (Everton)
The 27-year-old has continued to perform consistently well for Everton after a solid showing in the 2010-11 season. He is undoubtedly one of David Moyes' most valuable assets at Everton and he has contributed 4 league goals this season. Baines missed out on the England squad for the 2010 World Cup, but has almost certainly done enough to secure his spot in the squad for Euro 2012.

Position: Midfielder
Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur)
Having been the stand out performer in a West Ham side that was relegated last season, Parker completed a move to Tottenham on deadline day. He has continued his hard-working and effective form since arriving at White Hart Lane and has forced his way into the England starting XI ahead of Euro 2012. The reigning FWA Footballer of the Year was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award for the second season running.

Position: Midfielder
Yaya Toure (Manchester City)
The versatile player has proven his worth both as a holding player and also in a more advanced role for Manchester City this season. A popular figure at the Etihad, Toure has earned his place in the Team of the Year, despite his absence for the African Cup of Nations. He was sorely missed at the club while representing Ivory Coast but he has still contributed to the cause with 4 goals and 5 assists.

Position: Midfielder
David Silva (Manchester City)
The classy Spanish midfielder was in exceptional form in the first half of the season, winning the Premier League Player of the Month award for September 2011. He has contributed 6 goals and 13 assists to the team this season. His pass completion  rate of 87% is one of the best in the country and has seen him compared to fellow Spain internationals Xavi and Iniesta. When asked if he was planning on joining them at Barcelona, Silva made it clear his desire to remain at City for the foreseeable future.

Position: Midfielder
Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur)
The 2010-11 season saw Bale crowned as the PFA Player of the Year, for his excellent performances for both Tottenham and Wales. The winger has once again proved himself as one of the best in the country, scoring nine Premier League goals for Spurs and continuing to be a nightmare for Premier League defences. The winger was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award and at just 22 years of age, he has racked up an impressive list of personal achievements already.

Position: Forward
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
It has been a record-breaking season for the England forward. The 26-year-old has moved up to sixth in United's all time goalscorers chart, scoring 26 league goals in this season's campaign. A large part of Manchester United's surge for the title has been down to Rooney and his rich feign of scoring form. He has surpassed the goalscoring records of Mark Hughes and Joe Spence at Old Trafford this season.

Position: Forward
Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
The Dutchman's goalscoring record this season has been phenomenal. He currently has 27 goals to him name in his first season as captain of Arsenal. The October Premier League Player of the Month has suffered in the past from injury problems, but has managed to stay fit this season, to Arsenal's benefit. His goalscoring exploits this season have seen him earn universal praise. As a reward for his excellent season, van Persie was named the PFA Player of the Year.
