Mowbray warning for City

Tony Mowbray believes Manchester City's riches offer no guarantee that the club will be successful in the future. The West Brom boss feels English footballs' elite - Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal - are in a league of their own and will never be caught. City are hoping to join that select group in the next few years, with substantial funding expected to be given to Mark Hughes in the transfer market. However, Mowbray insists even the best players in the world would be unable to help the Blues break the top-four monopoly which exists in the Premier League. "I'm not sure spending £200million in the summer would be enough to get City into the top four," he said. Expectations "The gap between the top clubs and the rest is too big. "They could sign Fernando Torres and Rio Ferdinand and they still wouldn't get into it. They would get closer but not actually into it. "If you gave me those two, I could even get West Brom into the top 10 and we wouldn't be fighting relegation. "It's not for me to say what City fans' expectations are but if the owners invest the sort of sums being talked about, you would have to imagine they would want and expect to be part of the top four. "But three of those teams are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and that proves this is the best league in the world and how good our competition is."
