MARTIN KEOWN: Manchester City must start thinking positively

NO SPARK, NO PASSION Manchester City were so negative on Wednesday - it was as if they were playing with the handbrake on. Conceding late goals in previous derby games seemed to make them determined not to lose and they showed barely any ambition. [LNB]Remember how passionate and direct Craig Bellamy was in the derbies last season? That is what City lacked - any sort of urgency or pride. There were times when Kolo Toure had the ball at the back and you were just desperate to see him bring it into midfield. [LNB]The full backs rarely got past the halfway line, no-one took risks and that is best illustrated by the fact that Paul Scholes - aged 35 - played 90 minutes and barely looked out of breath. [LNB] Driving forward: Manchester City showed little adventure going forward against United[LNB]4-4-2 IS BESTThe City player who impressed me most was Yaya Toure. He is beginning to show why he is on so much money. His box-to-box performance was enough to persuade me that Roberto Mancini could easily play 4-4-2 instead of 4-5-1. [LNB]Toure covers enough ground so that he and Nigel de Jong could look after central midfield without a third man, allowing Mancini to either play Mario Balotelli up alongside Carlos Tevez or to move James Milner in behind Tevez, where Milner would be more effective, and get a conventional winger into the side. [LNB]Moving to a 4-4-2 would also help eradicate much of the congestion in the midfield. The other issue with 4-5-1 is that Tevez likes to buzz around all over the place and that leaves no focal point for the midfield. He would be more effective with a partner alongside him. [LNB] New recruit: Jerome Boateng cost £10m, but does he offer more than Micah Richards?[LNB]GOOD VALUE?City have spenta lot of money but has it really improved their team? They spent £10mon Jerome Boateng but, watching him at right back so far, I wouldn'tsay he was any better than Micah Richards.[LNB]It is too early to pass judgment on Aleksandar Kolarov as he only had a 10-minute cameo, but he wasn't exactly overwhelming. David Silva and Milner were not involved in the game enough and neither looked like they were going to makeanything happen.[LNB]  Roberto Mancini's Manchester City job is mission accomplished despite the snore factorPeter Schmeichel warns Manchester City scattergun spending will only buy problemsManchester City must start thinking positivelyMANCHESTER CITY FC
