The game was even until the players were removed because of crowd trouble and when they returned, the hosts ran riot, City fan Andy Hinchcliffe capping a day still spoken of in hushed tones with a wonderful fifth. Relegated at Old Trafford, doom confirmed when Denis Law, the Stretford End's old hero, backheeled them to oblivion. Law, utterly heartbroken at what he had done, was substituted immediately and never kicked a ball in league football again. He can take solace from the fact, though, that, because Birmingham also won, United were going down anyway. This hammering perfectly illustrated the gulf in class between the two sides - Andrei Kanchelskis and Eric Cantona magnificent, the Ukrainian scoring a hat-trick to gain revenge for 1989. Sheikh Mansour's oil billions, though, promise a return to the days of the early 1970s, when the two met as equals, United top and City third. The latter came back from 2-0 and 3-2 down and even won bragging rights at the end of the season, finishing four points ahead of the Old Trafford side. A poor City side somehow inspired themselves to rout the old enemy. United, admittedly, were at a 'transitional' phase between two great sides. But City had Jon Macken, Trevor Sinclair and Robbie Fowler -all of whom scored - meaning this is still one of the most unlikely derby results on record. Watch YouTube [LNB]
