Manchester poster war reaches boiling point as United boss Sir Alex blasts City

The poster war between fans of Manchester rivals United and City has reached fever pitch after Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson branded a billboard erected by Eastlands' fans ‘stupid and arrogant’. City have returned from their pre-season tour of South Africa to criticism from Ferguson over a huge poster in Manchester city centre celebrating the signing of Tevez and proclaiming ‘Welcome to Manchester’. Ferguson said: 'It's City isn't it? They are a small club, with a small mentality. ‘All they can talk about is Manchester United, that's all they've done and they can't get away from it. 'It is a go at us, that's the one thing it is. They think taking Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff. I thought he would go to City a long time ago. 'I don't look upon City as my biggest challengers. For all the buying they have done, they still have to pick a team with balance. 'That won't be easy for Mark Hughes. What's he got, 10 strikers? So, if he picks a squad to go to Chelsea, he has to leave seven behind, or five at least. He has to deal with that. It will not be easy.' The huge image of Tevez, who has moved from United to Eastlands this summer, was erected near Manchester's Harvey Nichols store in an attempt to get up Red Devils' fans noses. The ploy appeared to have worked after supporters of the Champions League runners-up used rolled-up socks dipped in red paint to splatter the offending image. City fans then apparently reacted to the splattering of their poster with a spoof email poking fun at the champions' recruit Michael Owen, who was signed on a free after his contract at Newcastle expired, and his less-than-impressive injury record. The missive also has a further dig at the fact that Old Trafford does not lie within the city of Manchester boundaries. Not content at putting red marks on City's prized new signing, some United wags have been circulating the emails below in response to the Owen jibe.
