Manchester City's Champions League Campaigns

Manchester City have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare and could even go through as Group D winners. Their progress this season contrasts with some of their past struggles in the competition. Here, Press Association Sport looks back at their previous campaigns.

2011-12

City's first Champions League campaign is best remembered for the touchline row between manager Roberto Mancini and substitute Carlos Tevez at Bayern Munich. Mancini claimed Tevez refused to come on and the subsequent long-running furore - during which the player took unauthorised leave - overshadowed a lot of City's season. They recovered to claim a creditable 10 points from a tough group that also included Napoli and Villarreal but it was not enough and they dropped into the Europa League.

2012-13

City landed another difficult group and consequently struggled. They failed to win any of their six matches against Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid or Ajax, becoming the first English side to fail to register a victory in the competition. They mustered just a paltry three points and finished bottom of the group.

2013-14

Under new manager Manuel Pellegrini, City finally qualified for the knockout stages. They did so comfortably, chalking up 15 points in a group that included Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen, but they were left kicking themselves for not winning the group. Pellegrini misunderstood the goal difference and head-to-head rules and did not chase more goals as they beat Bayern 3-2 in their last game, keeping Sergio Aguero on the bench. Another goal would have seen them top the group and avoid Barcelona in the last 16. They subsequently lost to the Catalans over two legs with a player sent off in each match.

2014-15

Pellegrini's men made heavy weather of the group stage, collecting just two points from their opening four games. That included a dismal surrender from 2-0 up to draw with CSKA Moscow in Russia, and losing to the same side at the Etihad Stadium. But Aguero revived hope by completing a hat-trick with two late goals to sink Bayern Munich 3-2 and City then won under pressure at Roma to go through. Unfortunately for them they then drew Barcelona again and were comprehensively outplayed in their last-16 tie.
