Manchester City are close to agreeing a deal to sign Jerome Boateng from Hamburg in the summer

The 21-year-old defender, who can operate across the back four, has been linked with a move to Eastlands for most of the season and, according to the Hamburger Abendblatt, will complete a move for around £11million.

Boateng's former team-mates Nigel de Jong and Vincent Kompany are at City while his brother, Kevin-Prince, is on Portsmouth's books.

Bayern Munich were also linked with the Germany international but Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini has won the race for his signature with 20 per cent of any fee going to his former club Hertha Berlin.

A Hamburg spokesman said: 'Jorg Neubauer, Jerome Boateng's agent, has informed us that the player wants to move. There is no deal agreed yet, however.'
