Newcastle

have had an £8million bid for Michael Johnson knocked back by Manchester City.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for the England Under 21 international throughout the transfer window but City insist they do not want to sell their best young players.

Johnson, 20, has also attracted recent interest from Wigan and Fulham.

The two clubs have already done business in the January transfer window with goalkeeper Shay Given leaving Tyneside for Eastlands.
