Manchester City Player of the Season: Yaya, Kompany or Zabaleta?

Although the blue half of Manchester has had an admittedly disappointing season in the league, they have an excellent chance of winning the FA Cup and 2nd place in the league is no mean feat. Despite underperforming, they have had some excellent individual performances; Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta have particularly impressed.

Let’s start with the Ivorian. The powerful midfielder has been a consistent performer in the heart of the Manchester City team and is a terrifying sight when driving at any defence in the world. He has linked up with the defence and the attack effectively and has deservedly enhanced his reputation as one of the best deep lying midfielders in the world.

Belgian captain Vincent Kompany has had another impressive season in the middle of the Citizens’ defence. Although injury has seen him miss part of the season, he has still made 24 league appearances and there is no doubt that the team improves when Kompany is playing. He is a commanding, no-nonsense centre-back who has added one goal when he has ventured forward, and should remain a City stalwart for years to come – he is still only 27.

Argentinian right back Pablo Zabaleta has again demonstrated why he is widely considered the best in the league at what he does. The determined full back has been virtually everpresent for City this season, making 27 appearances in the league, and has beaten off competition including Maicon and Micah Richards to play in his position. The passionate defender has also scored 2 league goals this season, capping off a memorable personal season for the South American.

Whilst City have every right to be dismayed at how easily they have returned the title to the other half of Manchester, they still have played very well for their 2nd spot. It just shows how far City have come that 2nd place and an FA Cup Final spot can be considered a disappointment. However, Kompany, Zabaleta and particularly Yaya Toure have performed particularly well for the Sky Blues.
