Manchester City in 'contact' with Arsenal over Emmanuel Adebayor transfer

Speaking at the official presentation of his new signing, Carlos Tevez, Hughes admitted that contact had been made between the clubs over a deal for Togo striker Adebayor. "I think there's been discussions between ourselves and Arsenal but, as is my usual response about players that we haven't signed, really it's not the right time or place to discuss that - only in as much as, yes, there has been contact," Hughes said. "There's a deal to be done possibly but it's not been concluded as we speak. Until it actually happens, really it's not the time or the place to discuss it here." Hughes has already signed Paraguayan Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn to add to his burgeoning forward line, and said that further deals were possible. "There may well be opportunities that present themselves. We'd like to be in a position at the beginning of the season to challenge." Tevez completed his move today after passing a medical, and reports in the media had suggested that Adebayor was also to undertake a medical this afternoon, with a view to completing a big-money move. City have made no secret of the fact that they are interested in signing England captain John Terry, but Hughes said that while he admires the player, he will not discuss any moves for him without the permission of Chelsea. "I've got fantastic respect for John Terry. He's a great player and an outstanding captain. But at this moment in time he's a Chelsea player, and we have to respect that," Hughes said.
