Manchester City hone in on Diego Forlan

Forlan, 29, has previously said he would welcome a return to the Premier League and prove he has what it takes to be a success in England's top-flight competition. The Uruguayan's two-year spell at Old Trafford was a chastening experience; Forlan scored 10 goals in 63 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's men between 2002 and 2004. However, since leaving Old Trafford and rebuilding his confidence in Spain, Forlan has once again attracted the interest of Europe's top teams. He has been prolific for both Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, and netted his 28th La Liga goal of the season from the penalty spot recently as Atletico beat Valencia. City manager Mark Hughes and chief executive Garry Cook were both in attendance, also casting their eye over David Villa, but Villa is more likely to join Barcelona this summer prompting City to target Forlan. The Mirror claims Atletico have placed a £20m valuation on Forlan's head, which Hughes considers far too steep and he is hoping Forlan will attempt to persuade the Spanish side to lower their asking price. Meanwhile, City midfielder Vincent Kompany believes the world's top players should not be put off by the club's position in the league table - they are currently 10th - and is convinced they will push on next season. He said: "People will realise it's a clever move to come to Man City. Those who followed us from the beginning of the season can see how we've progressed, how many players we've had available and how small our squad was even if we invested in the team. "Those who look at all this will realise we're actually building a platform for next season."
