Manchester City's Barclays Premier League clash with Sunderland has been postponed, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.
The match has fallen victim to the severe weather which has battered the north west.
A tweet from police read: "GAME OFF - Manchester City's V Sunderland has been called off because conditions are deemed 'unsafe'. #MCFC"
City captain Vincent Kompany also announced the game had been called off via his Twitter feed.
Kompany tweeted: "Game's called off! Make sure you get yourselves home and be safe, weather is terrible! #mcfc"
City might have had the opportunity to move back to the top of the Barclays Premier League had the game gone ahead and other results gone in their favour.
The game will now have to be rearranged for later in the season, creating extra fixture congestion for a side still competing in four competitions.
The decision to call off the match was taken on safety grounds after the Met Office issued an amber warning for severe winds for Greater Manchester.
The more severe, and rare, red warning - the highest possible - was in place for other parts of the north west, including Merseyside.
Everton were also due to take on Crystal Palace but that match was still due to go ahead.
Stoke, who were hosting Swansea at the Britannia Stadium, issued a statement at 1840 confirming their game was still due to go ahead, with the kick-off put back to 2000.
It read: "Whilst referee Jon Moss has to continuously monitor the situation, with the Met Office forecasting that the wind will drop after 7pm, the expectation is that the game will definitely be on."
