Manchester City enter race for Tottenham winger David Bentley

After securing the attacking services of Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and, in all likelihood, Emmanuel Adebayor, Hughes will now focus his attentions on the defence and wide areas of his side. With that in mind, Bentley has emerged as a surprise target for City, according to a report in the Mirror newspaper. Hughes was Bentley's manager at Blackburn and would welcome the opportunity to work with the England international again. Bentley left Ewood Park for Tottenham last summer in a £16 million deal but after being a regular under Juande Ramos in the early part of the season found his playing time reduced after the arrival of Harry Redknapp during a frustrating stop start season at White Hart Lane. The 24-year-old has also attracted the interest of Everton, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa though none of those sides has anything approaching City's financial muscle. Bentley would be available for around £12 million as Redknapp looks to prune his squad and generate funds for his own ambitious spending programme. The Tottenham manager has identified Peter Crouch of Portsmouth and Real Madrid forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as his primary attacking targets with the Dutchman stalling on a proposed £15.5 million move to Stuttgart while Crouch, who is also wanted by Fulham and Sunderland, would cost £12 million.
