Manchester City: Elano talks not top priority

Elano, whose return to form in recent weeks has coincided with City's surge up the Premier League table, claimed earlier this week that he would be keen to open talks over a new contract at the end of the current campaign. The former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has endured a difficult relationship with manager Hughes, openly criticising the Welshman earlier this season over his failure to hand him a regular place, but the pair now appear to have eased tensions between them. Despite Elano's new-found form, however, Hughes insists that the player must wait for any talks over a new deal. Hughes said: "Elano has two more years left to run on his contract, so it isn't really a priority at the moment. "There are a number of other players with less time on their contract, so they are the ones we will have to look at. Elano is not one of those players that we need to look at and discuss renegotiate terms with. "But I have certainly been pleased with him of late and the positive impact that he has had on the team. "He has been working really hard for the team and his performances have been good. He is having an impact and I am pleased about that. He is enjoying his football and playing in a good team at the moment." City face Hughes's former club Blackburn on Saturday in a game that is crucial for the hopes of both teams. Hughes's team require points to maintain their push for Europe, while Blackburn continue to pursue the victory that should secure their Premier League status. City are likely to be without the injured Pablo Zabaleta and Shaun Wright-Phillips, but Micah Richards is expected to train on Friday after suffering with a knee problem this week. Hughes said: "We are really pleased with our recent results and we are still looking at Europe. "Seventh position is still up for grabs and we have spoken about it as a group. That has been our focus for some time now."
