Manchester City 4 Wolves 3: Tevez still the best man as Blues go top of Premier League

15 January 2011 23:32
At last, Manchester City have thefirepower to win their first league title since 1968. Having beenderided for negative tactics against Arsenal and Manchester United,Roberto Mancini unleashed £27million debutant Edin Dzeko alongside£26.5m Carlos Tevez and the result was dynamite. [LNB]City blew away Wolves with fourgoals in 26 minutes after surrendering a shock early lead against thePremier League strugglers and now top the table, albeit having playedthree games more than their city rivals. [LNB]For once, it was the defenders, notmisfiring forwards, who fell under the manager's scrutiny after a latecollapse nearly cost them a victory.[LNB] Hot shot: Defender Kolo Toure (left) scores for Manchester City[LNB]'We must still improve,' saidMancini. 'If you are winning 4-1 after 70 minutes, we should be able tocontrol the game better. We seemed to think it was finished, though, and lost our concentration. The penalty we gave away was stupid.' [LNB]City fans might have bitten theirfingernails to the bone in the final few minutes, but before then ithad been party time. Tevez, still the captain despite handing in atransfer request earlier in the season, showed he remains the club'sbiggest star. [LNB]His brace made it 15 goals for theseason already and none of them better than his first after 49 minutes, when he scored a goal similar to fellow Argentinian Ricky Villa'sfamous solo effort against City in the 1981 FA Cup final replay.[LNB] Heads up: Carlos Tevez scores City's fourth goal[LNB]Dzeko, though, was impressive in asupporting role, playing a delightful one-two with Tevez before settingup Yaya Toure for City's third. Best of all for City was the way theirattacking players interchanged. [LNB]Dzeko started in the middle withYaya Toure supporting and Tevez on the left. But when Tevez cameinfield, the link-up play with Dzeko was too much for Wolves to handle.[LNB]'Dzeko has only worked with histeam-mates for a week and has not played a game for 30 days, but itwill be easy for him to play together with Carlos after three or fourgames because they are both good players,' said Mancini.[LNB] Top man: Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez (R) celebrates after scoring second goal[LNB] Wolves, who beat City at Molineuxearlier in the season as well as Chelsea and Liverpool, had capitalisedon the first bit of dodgy City defending after 12 minutes when KoloToure's clearance rebounded off Vincent Kompany into the path of NenadMilijas, who scored at the second time of asking off goalkeeper JoeHart. [LNB]But City ended a poor first half onlevel terms when Kolo Toure's shot from a corner skidded past threedefenders and Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey on the line, although thefinal touch seemed to come off David Jones. [LNB]'I am really ill with that goalbecause they hadn't put a scratch on us before that and they weregetting a few boos,' said Wolves boss Mick McCarthy. [LNB]He was right to worry. City neverlooked back, particularly after Tevez had weaved his magic after 49minutes. A lucky ricochet allowed the ball to land at Tevez's feet onthe edge of the area, but after that it was pure magic from the SouthAmerican.[LNB] Golden delight: Wolves midfielder Nenad Milijas opens the scoring[LNB]As Christophe Berra and Stephen Huntcame out to block him, Tevez jinked outside the pair of them. RichardStearman dashed over as emergency cover, Tevez feinted and, with awiggle of his hips, cut inside, leaving the Wolves defender helpless. [LNB]Dzeko was in the middle, hoping fora tap-in, but Tevez finished what he had started and slipped a finishunder Hennessey. Glorious. [LNB]City followed up that fantasticindividual goal with a perfect team goal, in which Dzeko was heavilyinvolved. He controlled a clearance instantly and played a one-two withTevez before shrugging off Stearman and laying a slide-rule pass intothe path of Yaya Toure, whose lung-busting forward run from midfieldwas rewarded when he beat Hennessey from 10 yards. [LNB]All Dzeko needed to crown a finedebut was a goal, but Tevez was getting in all the best scoringpositions and when Pablo Zabaleta floated over a 66th-minute chip intothe sixyard box, he rose to head in off the underside of the crossbar. [LNB]That should have been it and Manciniwould have accepted a boring final 20 minutes. Instead, substituteJoleon Lescott recklessly bundled into Kevin Doyle, who scored from thespot. [LNB]And City were placed in near-panicmode when a Ronald Zubar header from a corner was adjudged to havecrossed the line before Nigel de Jong had hacked it away. [LNB]Breathless stuff and not what Mancini is known for. But with Dzeko and Tevez in tandem, he had better start getting used to it.
