Man Utd v Man City live!

10 May 2009 12:51
90+3 Dunne heads clear from the corner and City play the ball out of defence. 90+2 Rooney finds Berbatov in the box and he shows lovely skill to trick Dunne but the Irishman gets back well to concede a corner. 90+1 Into stoppage time now and surely three points in the bag for United. 90+1 Majestic stuff from Rafael as he beats three men before being fouled. Huge cheers from the OT faithful. 90 Tevez hits the post for a second time. Fletcher heads the corner goalwards and Tevez - a yard from goal - heads it into the post. Almost cracked his head as well. 90 Robinho leaves the pitch to ironic cheers from the home fans. Ched Evans replaces him for the dying minutes. 89 Tevez still working hard and sets up Rooney, who finds Scholes clean through with a super pass. But Dunne gets back really well to concede a corner. 88 City corner comes to nothing and United to break. 87 Almost a nervy last few minutes for United as Petrov fires in a left-footed cracker that van der Sar has to tip round the post. 86 Kompany gets to the edge of the United box and tries to find Robinho, but he's stopped in his tracks by a shuddering challenge from the excellent Vidic. 85 Job done yet for United? Not if you go by Fergie on the bench. Chewing gum furiously and throwing his arms up in the air. Old school. 84 Rafael shoots from distance for United but Given saves. 83 Tevez dinks the ball into the box for Rooney, who tries to return it to the Argentine. Good work from Ireland though as City clear. 82 Dunne's deep ball forward is shepherded back to van der Sar by Vidic. 81 Great work from Fletcher who tracks back to break up a City attack. Ferdinand applauds in the directors box as Ricky Hatton looks on ruefully. 81 Rooney takes the corner and pings it to Giggs on the edge of the box. His volley draws gasps from the crowd although it's heading way off target. Kompany blocks and City clear. 80 Berbatov does really well to hold the ball up from Rafael's clearance. But there's no support and the Bulgarian does well to win a corner. 79 Great stuff from Giggs who tracks Richards all the way across the pitch before bringing him down. Great in terms of work ethic - not the foul. 78 Petrov flagged offside as the Old Trafford faithful get into full voice. 77 City probing for an opening, but they've lacked quality in the final third so far. 76 Dunne goes through the back of Berbatov and is penalised. Free-kick just inside the City half. 76 Giggs takes the corner and Vidic hurls himself at it. Good defending from Dunne who is rock-solid and heads clear. 75 United win a corner off Ireland as we head towards the last 15 minutes. A third goal for the home side definitely would finish it. 74 Tevez again tries to make the case for a permanent deal by beating Dunne and then Onuoha before firing a 20-yarder wide of Given's goal. 73 City make another substitution as Martin Petrov replaces de Jong. 72 City are at least trying to make a fight of this but Bojinov is penalised for handball just outside the United box. 71 City win a free-kick midway inside the United half.. Elano takes but it's woeful and Vidic heads out yet again under no pressure at all. Slinging aimless balls at Vidic really isn't the way to get this job done. 70 Kompany and Richards go up for the corner, and it's the latter who gets his head on the ball. Well wide of the United goal though. 70 That knock Evans took has ended his afternoon. He's replaced by John O'Shea. 70 Half-chance for City as they break fast. Robinho shows great strength to hold off Rafael before finding Bojinov on the edge of the box. His shot is deflected wide for a corner. 69 De Jong heads powerfully clear from the Giggs corner. 69 Super play from United as Scholes pings a cracking 50-yard ball to Giggs on the left. His cross is deflected out for a corner. 68 Evans does well to dispossess Bojinov and break up a promising City attack. Comes away limping though. We'll see if he can run that off. 67 Excellent play from Richards to mop up well for City at the back. 66 Just about halfway through the second half and United not totally comfortable at 2-0, but City really need a goal pretty soon to make it interesting. 65 Elano tricks Evra on the City right and the United full-back hauls him down. Free-kick comes to nothing as Scholes times his challenge on Ireland perfectly. 64 Deep cross to the back post and van der Sar comes out of his goal to make a confident catch. 63 City make a change as Valeri Bojinov replaces Caicedo. Their corner comes to nothing. 62 Vidic concedes a corner - he can't believe it - and City have a chance to produce an opening. 61 This time Elano does produce an excellent ball into the United box but Vidic does really well to intercept with Caicedo lurking. Ronaldo meanwhile now shaking his head repeatedly on the bench. 60 Ronaldo comes off and is replaced by Rooney. The Portuguese was far from happy - toys out of the pram time. Paul Scholes is also on, for Park. 59 Break in play now - City have come into the game a little more at the start of the second half. United with not quite the same potency to their attacking play. 58 Kia Joorabchian now on camera in the directors box - and on the phone. Nowhere near David Gill - who isn't on the phone. 57 Giggs takes a United corner on their right but Berbatov can't outwrestle Richards and City can clear their lines. Then down the other end Vidic heads clear yet again as Bridge crosses in. Caicedo then produces a woeful attempt at a volley and eventually van der Sar collects. 56 Poor crossfield ball from Elano gives away possession. He's been fitful at best this afternoon. United almost capitalise as Park tries to find Tevez inside the box. City clear. Chants of "Rooney, Rooney" as he warms up on the touchline. 55 Tevez does well on the right to get a low cross but Onuoha intercepts. Only finds Fletcher with his clearance though and is lucky that the home side don't capitalise. 54 Robinho fouls Park - free-kick United in the centre circle. 53 Pretty muted again here at Old Trafford. United well on top but a goal from City could change all that. You don't get the impression this one is done and dusted just yet. 52 City knocking the ball around at the back and probably still wondering how Robinho failed to at least hit the target. 51 Great chance for City, and it goes begging. Robinho controls an angled ball into the area and shakes off the attentions of Park. But from 10 yards out with only van der Sar to beat he blasts wide. Golden opportunity. 51 Ireland dinks the ball forward just outside the United box and it appears to hit Evans on the arm, nothing doing. Ironic chants of "Handball" now from the home fans every few seconds. 50 Tevez works really hard to win the ball back on the United right and plays it back to Rafael. He crosses venomously and it skims the top of the City net with Given backpedalling anxiously. 49 Vidic, under pressure from Caicedo, plays the ball back to van der Sar. 48 Nice play from Ireland as he breaks forward into the centre circle and is hauled down by Fletcher. Yellow card for the United midfielder. 47 Elano's corner is poor (his delivery has been very disappointing so far) and Evra clears easily on the near post. 47 Super ball from Ireland across field towards Robinho but Rafael heads out for a City corner. 46 Back under way at Old Trafford as United close in the title, and City somehow try to stem the tide. This could get ugly if they don't start this half well. Too many Tevez mails to mention I'm afraid folks, but surprisingly enough at this precise moment most of you want him to stay. Teams back out - can City turn it round? Find out in the next 45 minutes. Danny Glover (that Danny Glover?) says: "United shouldn't have bothered with Berbatov. Tevez is a much more of an all rounded player and works hard for a team that is yet to sign him!" Martin Ward chimes in with a good point, arguing: "If Tevez had scored more like that this season United wouldn't be thinking of letting him go." John Sheehan from Ireland sums up the feelings of the growing "sign Tevez" lobby, saying: "Its gonna be really sad to see Tevez leave, Sir Alex has not made many mistakes , but if he lets Tevez go he is making a massive one." Do you want to tell him John? Marshall Yam tells us: "Pound for pound, City's players can almost match United's. It's all about having the winner's mentality and killer instinct. United have it. City don't. Hughes is sadly no match for Fergie. Marshall (a frustrated City supporter)." Couldn't have put it better myself. Very astute. Mark Wadsworth says: "Good afternoon Graham, great commentating! (Mark, craic like that is always guaranteed to get you a mention!) "Fantastic first half from Manchester United, the Premier League trophy is surely staying at Old Trafford. Come on Ferguson, sort out a new contract for the magnificent Tevez!" Sohail Ali Shaukat in Dublin sums up the feeling of watching LIverpool fans. He says: I'm absolutely gutted, just dont see where man utd are going to drop points.this may well be game over for liverpools title bid.looks like im going to skip the second half of this game...cant bear to watch utd games anymore...they keep on winning....oh the pain...feels like ive just been dumped." Plenty more fish in the sea Ali! Edward Keeling says: "Well Man Utd show why they are so good. We really need to sign Tevez because he scores crucial goals. And Yet again Ronaldo from a free-kick 26 goals in total now." Saad Masood is our first half-time mailer, and he says: "I think Sir Alex will sign Tevez before the Champions League Final." We'll wait and see what happens on that one. Foy blows his whistle and United are halfway to three priceless points in the Premier League title race. If Carlos Tevez is on his Old Trafford farewell tour, then what a way to go! Superb goal to add to Ronaldo's opener, and United in the box seat in a big way. Send your mails to graham.shaw@bskyb.com and I'll print the best. 45+1 Now City really are up against it. They've played well in patches without showing the belief or the spark to produce a goal. That has to change pretty soon if they're to get back into this one. 45 GOAL TEVEZ - How right was Ferguson to pick him? Another masterstroke from the Scot, and what a goal! Fletcher plays a lovely ball forward and Berbatov controls it magnificently just outside the box. He squares to Tevez who fashions a shooting chance and blasts a superb strike that again hits the post but this time finds the net as well. Given absolutely no chance. Game over? Could well be. 44 Giggs is penalised for fouling Elano. City have a free-kick on their right. Can they level before the break? 43 Crowd getting restless as City are penalised deep inside the United half. Hasn't really had a derby feel to it yet this one. Still time though. 42 Berbatov fouled and United have a free-kick deep inside their own half. 41 Lovely play from Tevez as he cuts inside a couple of defenders before teeing up Ronaldo. Ball slightly behind the Portuguese though and he can't collect. 40 Foy gives Berbatov and Kompany a talking-to but nothing else. Looks from the replays like Berbatov kicked out at Kompany as they tussled, but Kompany made an awful lot of it. 39 United break down the right as Tevez finds Rafael. Referee blows up with Kompany down in pain in the box. He's pointing at Berbatov. Let's see what Chris Foy does. 38 Excellent spell of possession for City ends disappointingly when a curling shot/cross (not sure which it was supposed to be) from de Jong falls harmlessly into the arms of van der Sar. 37 Super play from Evra down the right as he fizzes a cross right across the area. No United attacker there to profit though. 36 Evans gets his head on the corner from Giggs but despite wrestling a City defender Tevez can't profit. 36 Tevez finds Park on the right and his cross is deflected out for a corner by Bridge. 35 Mark Hughes looking restless on the touchline. Side haven't been outplayed, but they've not really capitalised on the good positions they've gotten into. 34 Park links up with Ronaldo but Ronaldo's return ball is too strong for the South Korean. 33 First booking of the afternoon, to Ireland for sliding in late on the overlapping Evra. Fair decision. 33 Giggs takes the corner and Given does well to take it before setting City away with a quick throw. 32 United win a corner on their right and Giggs will take. 31 Almost a Tevez wonder goal. Fletcher finds Evra on the left, and he backheels it inside to Tevez. He fashions a shooting chance from the left-hand side of the box and fires in a terrific strike that hits the post hight up with Given beaten all ends up. 31 Giggs curls the free-kick into the City box but Dunne heads powerfully clear. 30 Robinho fouls Park as the South Korean raids down the United right. Free-kick to the home side. 30 Muted spell at the moment. Pretty quiet as Evra shepherds the ball back to van der Sar. 29 Ball breaks kindly for Robinho 25 yards out after a tussle with Rafael. He shoots low but wide of van der Sar's goal. Half-chance for the Brazilian. 28 Bridge crosses into the six-yard area and yet again Vidic heads clear. Must have said that 10 times already. City haven't really got anybody into the box in good enough positions to profit from their possession. 27 Robinho cuts in from the left, runs infield and finds Caicedo. He plays it to Elano on the right, but his cross is headed clear by Rafael. 26 Giggs finds Ronaldo well on the left, but for once the Portuguese is let down by his close control. Throw to City. 25 Rafael raids forward again down the right but Elano tracks back. 25 City still knocking the ball around quite well. Kompany ventures forward to find Caicedo 20 yards out, but his left-foot shot is blocked. 24 Fergie, chewing gum furiously, isn't happy as United are penalised. Richards goes down the right and crosses but Vidic is there once again to head clear. 23 Tevez caught offside as Ronaldo plays the ball forward for him. 22 City win a free-kick midway inside the United half for a foul on Ireland. They've had some decent possession so far. 21 Fletcher picks up possession 25 yards out and 70,000 fans shout "shoot" in unison. He does, but scuffs his effort and it's a couple of yards wide. 21 Now Elano crosses to the back post and Evans heads clear for United. Ronaldo breaks down the left and crosses to the six-yard box with Tevez screaming for a cutback. City clear their lines. 20 Elano shoots from 20 yards out but it's blocked by Vidic, who has been excellent so far. Now City have a corner. How will they respond. Van der Sar comes to punch clear. 19 United threaten again but Dunne comes across well to stop the run of Tevez, who was running onto a Berbatov pass. 18 GOAL RONALDO - Who else? He shoots low from the free-kick, it deflects of de Jong in the City wall and beats the wrong-footed Given, who did get across and almost kept it out. Advantage United and a huge goal in this title race. 17 Berbatov brought down by Ireland 25 yards out, and Chris Foy blows up. Definitely in Ronaldo territory this one. 16 City win a free-kick midway inside the United half. Elano takes and curls it into the box but Vidic heads clear powerfully. Then Elano gives the ball away to Rafael and Vidic clears again. 15 Ronaldo did shoot, straight at the City wall though. 15 Ronaldo sizing up the free-kick - at least 40 yards out by the looks of it. Surely not? 14 Richard Dunne goes in hard on Berbatov and is penalised. Got the ball for me, little bit harsh on the City defender. Robust challenge but fair. 14 Ronaldo tries to glide past Richards just inside his own half but is stopped by an excellent tackle from the City defender. Ronaldo doesn't think so though. 13 Bridge crosses low into the United box but Vidic stoops to head clear. 12 Darren Fletcher finds Rafael in space on the right with a lovely pass. His curling left-foot cross to the back post is claimed by Given with three United attackers lurking. 11 Free-kick to United on their right as Vincent Kompany fouls Rafael after Robinho gave the ball away. Giggs delivers it into the six-yard box but Kompany gets above Berbatov to head clear. 10 City play the corner short to Elano. His cross hits Giggs and United try to break. 9 Nice play from Robinho. He cuts inside Rafael and plays a ball into the channel for Nedum Onuoha. He fights off Vidic and wins a corner, much to the disgust of the United defender. 8 Lovely interplay from Giggs, Berbatov and Ronaldo ends with the Welshman crossing into the six-yard box but it's easy meat for Given. 7 Ronaldo cuts in from the left and fires in a shot that is straight at Given. Perfectly positioned on his six-yard line, the City goalkeeper. 6 Delicious backheel from Robinho to his compatriot Elano sends him racing unmarked into the United box. He fires a woeful shot wide of goal from a great position. Shocking. 6 Ronaldo fools himself with a dummy and stepover, and Micah Richards comes away with the ball. He plays it forward but it's too strong and Vidic shepherds it back to van der Sar. 5 Tevez fires in a low shot from fully 25 yards out. Not much pace on it but Shay Given has to dive to get down to it. 4 Evra lets a ball from Ireland run out of play and United start to build down their left. Giggs wins a free-kick just inside his own half. 3 Cristiano Ronaldo causes problems for the City defence as a cross comes in from the right. Ball falls to Park and he shoots a couple of yards wide. 3 Stephen Ireland plays a good ball down the right but Giggs gets a boot on it and deflects it to Patrice Evra. Important foot from the Welshman. 2 Ryan Giggs penalised early and City have a free-kick in midfield. Wayne Bridge plays it forward to no-one in particular - through to Edwin van der Sar in the United goal. 1 Under way at Old Trafford and an early touch for Robinho. 1329 Just noticed that Ricky Hatton is sat next to Rio Ferdinand in the directors box. Who would you back? 1328 Right people, teams are out. It's officially squeaky bum time. Almost ready to rumble in M16. 1325 Last pre-match mail comes from Robbie Thomas, who says: "this game will certainly depend on which city turns up. but in a manchester derby while chasing europa league then surely the class will come out today. robiniho in form v evans you sure fergie? 2-1 city" 1325 Michael Brierley tells us: "As a United fan, I find it funny our referee is from Merseyside. Whilst I'm sure he will be a true professional, he will be blamed if things go wrong (al?helsea @ midweek) Prediction for the game: Giggs to score the winning goal, with United fans thanking City for our number 1 asset." 1325 Alex Oakley has an exotic prediction - he says: "Tevez to score a hat-trick and then get sent off!" Big odds on that Alex. 1325 Martin Petticrew says: "Tough to call but the ref!!! I have to laugh, HE had to come from Liverpool!!". Martin, I never said a word - thought I'd leave it to the rest of you! 1323 Right, first up is Adam Talbot, who says: "I am a united fan that is currently in work constantly checking the internet for news and updates, the next two hours will define where the premiership is going. We owe city from last year so fingers crossed we can do our bit as Liverpool did theirs yesterday! Cant let Gerrard win the premiership can we!" 1317 Right folks, what will happen in the next two hours? Send me your rants, raves, predictions and prayers to graham.shaw@bskyb.com - I'll print the best. 1315 If you fancy Tevez to justify his selection by opening the scoring, he's a top-priced 11-2 with Sky Bet. 1257 Your referee at Old Trafford this afternoon is Chris Foy from Merseyside. 1256 Man City: Given, Richards, Onuoha, Dunne, Bridge, Elano, Ireland, Kompany, De Jong, Robinho, Caicedo. Subs: Hart, Zabaleta, Bojinov, Petrov, Fernandes, Evans, Berti. 1255 Man Utd: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Ronaldo, Fletcher, Giggs, Park, Berbatov, Tevez. Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, Rooney, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, O'Shea. 1253 No Anderson or Carrick either in the United starting line-up. Giggs and Park are both in the XI. City are unchanged from the side that beat Blackburn. Full line-ups to follow shortly. 1246 Just when you think you've got Fergie figured out, he proves you wrong. Carlos Tevez starts for United despite those stories in the morning newspapers, and Wayne Rooney is on the bench. Dimitar Berbatov will start alongside Tevez up front. How about that! No Rio Ferdinand either in the starting line-up - Jonny Evans starts alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of the United defence. 1244 Just over 45 minutes to kick-off now, and a bit of info for anybody out there in cyberspace fancing a punt on the action. Sky Bet make United 1-3 for the win this afternoon (too skinny IMHO) while the draw is a 4-1 chance with City 8-1. 1218 Early news from Old Trafford, and Carlos Tevez is at the ground according to Sky Sports News. The Argentine said in the morning papers that he doesn't feel wanted at OT, and expects to be elsewhere next season. Will be interesting to see if he's a part of things on the pitch today. Further updates to follow as we count down towards kick-off at 1330 BST.
