Man City v Hamburg preview

16 April 2009 09:57
Manchester City lock horns with Hamburg in a match described by their manager Mark Hughes as "the biggest of our season so far". City, who are seeking a first cup success since 1976, tackle the Bundesliga side in the second leg of their Uefa Cup quarter-final tie having lost the first meeting 3-1. The Eastlands side face an uphill task if they are to mount a dramatic turnaround but Stephen Ireland's away goal last week has handed them a glimmer of hope. Hughes will also be optimistic when considering his team's home record, which has been far superior compared to results on their travels. Pressure However, pressure is mounting on Hughes after the weekend defeat to Fulham reduced the club's chances of securing a European berth this season. Expectations at the City of Manchester Stadium are sky-high, and former Blackburn Rovers boss Hughes will be aware that silverware this term would do much to relieve the speculation surrounding his position. Hughes is debating whether to restore Brazilian star Robinho to the team for the clash against Martin Jol's men. The club's record buy was relegated to the bench on Sunday but strikers Craig Bellamy and Benjani Mwaruwari are injured. JolShaun Wright-Phillips (ankle), Vincent Kompany (hamstring) and Wayne Bridge (hamstring) are also receiving treatment while Nigel de Jong is cup-tied. Ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss Jol, meanwhile, is without defender Collin Benjamin and anchorman Guy Demel for the encounter. Jol, whose charges are three points off the Bundesliga summit and face a German Cup semi-final next week, is seeking to end Hamburg's 22-year wait for a trophy.
