Man City defender John Stones: Now we must prove ourselves in Champions League

John Stones hopes Manchester City can prove themselves in the Champions League after securing their place in the group stage once again.

City reached the semi-finals last season and ensured they will be back in the competition for a sixth successive year after seeing off Steaua Bucharest in the play-off round.

Their place was all but secured after a 5-0 win in the first leg of the tie in Romania last week but the job still had to be completed on Wednesday.

Fabian Delph scored the only goal of the return leg at the Etihad Stadium as City fulfilled one of their most important aims of the opening weeks of the season with a comfortable 1-0 triumph.

Defender Stones said: "It is a good feeling, a good win. It's a relief, I suppose.

"We wanted to build on a good victory away from home. It was in our minds that we had a good lead but we wanted to build on that and we feel we definitely got what we wanted to achieve.

"It is massive for everyone, the club, the fans. It is a great stage to go and prove ourselves.

"We wanted to make sure we did it and we did it comfortably. We have got a lot of things to work on but we will get in every day and strive to get to the next round of this competition."

The game was Stones' fourth since joining City in a £47.5million deal from Everton earlier this month and he has looked at ease in each of them.

The 22-year-old seems to have settled well but, with the club just at the start of an exciting new era under Pep Guardiola, he feels he cannot afford to let standards slip.

Stones said: "I am just trying to work hard, as everyone else is in the team, to get better and on the same page as everyone.

"It is great to play when things come off and we are still working out how we can improve. We'll keep working hard on the training pitch and bring that to the games. Every game is a new challenge and it is an exciting one.

"It is all new feelings - new club, new surroundings, new players - but it is all settling in so quickly.

"I feel at home and am just enjoying my football, but everyone wants to be in that starting XI. All I can do is keep working hard.

"It is vital you do that in training and prove yourself and show that you deserve to play on the weekend. Everyone is doing that in the team."
